Nicolás Schubert is a Chilean lawyer working at the intersection of law, digital economy, and AI governance. He negotiated digital economy and intellectual property issues at the WTO, APEC, WIPO, and the OECD.
He now works on institutional public affairs at GMTO and runs Meridiano, his regulatory advisory practice, with clients in Chile, Colombia, Argentina, and Uruguay working on digital economy and intellectual property. He also advises Chile's national AI center on intellectual property.
Before that, he was Public Policy Manager at Google for Spanish-speaking Latin America, and Head of Digital Economy and Intellectual Property at SUBREI, where he chaired APEC's Digital Economy Steering Group.
He writes Código Abierto, a series on the legal architecture and geopolitics of open source, in Spanish, with occasional pieces in English.
He has run Linux as his only OS for over 25 years. His homelab reflects it: every service runs in a Docker container behind a reverse proxy, provisioned through scripts instead of by hand, with automated snapshots and off-site backups so a failed disk never costs him data. A stack of dockerized services lives there instead of in a rented cloud (file sync, photo storage, a password vault, DNS-level ad blocking), so his data stays on hardware he controls, not on someone else's server.
He works in Spanish and English, gets by in German, and reads Portuguese.
